ABUSE

In this tool, ‘abuse’ constitutes behaviours that assert power and control over various transgender identity groups that constitute a minority and marginal social group. Abusive behaviours exist on a spectrum and can take a variety of forms.

Acronym for assigned female at birth.

ART ANTIRETROVIRAL THERAPY

Antiretroviral Therapy refers to treatment with drugs that inhibit the ability of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) or other types of retroviruses to multiply in the body.

is a form of psychological manipulation and emotional abuse wherein the abuser leads the victim to question their reality and sanity. Includes actions such as victim-blaming

Genital Mutilation

involves the partial or total removal of the external genitalia or injury of external genitalia for non-medical reasons. This is often performed on assigned female at birth and intersex children and is more commonly referred to as female genital mutilation

Gender reassignment surgery (GRS)

Gender reassignment surgery (GRS) refers to the surgical procedure(s) performed to match trans folx’ physical appearance and sexual characteristics to match those of their identified gender.

Normalizing surgery

Refers to a range of surgical procedures performed on intersex children aimed at reshaping their genitalia to conform to the binary. Can include removal of testes, ovaries, reshaping of external genitalia, etc. These can often be irreversible and invasive, and completely unnecessary.
